Life

Heidhues studied economics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . During his studies he became a member of the KDStV Sauerlandia Münster in 1959 in the CV . After completing his studies, he received his doctorate for a thesis on the problem of international capital movements.

From 1969 to 1982 he worked in the areas of capital market analysis, the evaluation of macroeconomic and sectoral economic policy, project identification, evaluation and monitoring of agricultural and rural development projects at the World Bank in Washington DC, USA. He then became professor for development theory and rural development policy at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart.

He was a member of the Center for Tropical and Sub-Tropical Agriculture. Heidhues' main research areas included strategies for poverty reduction, food security, sustainable management of natural resources and institutional development in rural areas with a special focus on rural financial markets in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. He also dealt with macroeconomic and ecological evaluation problems of innovations.

Heidhues has been a member of the board of directors of Deutsche Welthungerhilfe since 1987 and deputy chairman since 2004; From 1998 to 2009 he was a member of the scientific advisory board at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, which he took over as chairman in September 2004. He was also the spokesman for the interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Center 564 at the University of Hohenheim “Sustainable Land Use and Rural Development in the Mountain Regions of Southeast Asia”. In addition, he worked as co-editor of the Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture . Heidhues described participation and local knowledge as key elements of the sustainability of development projects. The key message of the concept of sustainability is that decisions made by today's generation should not limit the possibilities of future generations to maintain or improve their living conditions. With regard to development processes, there are three dimensions of sustainability: the ecological, the economic and the socio-cultural. In order to achieve sustainability in all three dimensions, it is essential to integrate the local population as well as local knowledge. This can be achieved through knowledge partnerships that bring farmers, local institutions, non-governmental organizations, advice and research together. Heidhues retired in 2007.
