Franz Himpsel

Franz Josef Himpsel (born October 30, 1949 in Rosenheim ) is a German physicist .

Himpsel received his diploma in physics in 1973 from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . His work dealt with quantum electrodynamics . After a year at CERN, he also received his doctorate in 1976 from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on photoemission from alkali halide single crystals . In 1977 he went to the Thomas J. Watson Research Center as a postdoc and gradually became head of the Surface Physics Department until 1985 . From 1984 to 1985 Himpsel was a visiting professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University. In 1995 Himpsel moved to the University of Wisconsin as Professor of Physics, where he has held the position of Ednor M. Rowe Professor of Physics since 2000 . From 1997 to 2002 Himpsel was Scientific Director at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC).

His main research interests are surface physics and nanostructures.
