Franz Josef / Waiau , also sometimes called Franz Josef Glacier on maps , is a town in the Westland District of the West Coast region on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place is named after the glacier Franz Josef Glacier .
geography
The place is about 100 km (148 km by road) southwest of Hokitika , directly on New Zealand State Highway 6 and on the Waiho River , the glacial river of the Franz Josef Glacier .

In the 2013 census, the town had 444 inhabitants, 3.5% more than in the 2006 census.
