Franz Ludwig Güssefeld (born December 6, 1744 in Osterburg , † June 17, 1808 in Weimar ) was a Prussian cartographer .

Life

From an early age he showed a talent for drawing and an interest in maps and geography. So he came to the building director Hahn in Königsberg in Prussia . With him and JJ Petris he worked on the measurement of the network break . These measurements were the basis for the subsequent drainage of the area. His attempt to get to the Prussian pioneer troops failed nevertheless. So he went to Sachsen-Weimar and was initially a forest adviser. In 1773 he came into contact with the geographer Anton Friedrich Büsching , who from then on provided him with geographic data. His map of Brandenburg was published by Homanns Erben ( Johann Baptist Homann ). Because of his success, he became a savior for the publishing house. In the next few years he published around 100 more maps. They were all famous for their accuracy and made Gussenfeld one of the most respected and productive cartographers of the 2nd half of the 18th century for the German area. From 1808 Gussenfeld worked for the Landes-Industrie-Comptoir and Geographische Institut von Bertuch in Weimar.

family

His father Franz Joachim Güssefeld (1702–1757) was a notary and senator in Seehausen , later (1731) he was still mayor. His mother was Catharina Sophie Albrecht (1703–1775), the daughter of councilor Christoph Albrecht. He was married to Johanna Christiana Brunquel (1744-1807) since 1780. She was divorced and had four children into the marriage. The couple had no other children.

His son-in-law in his first marriage, Johann Valentin Blaufuß, was also a surveyor and cartographer.
