Life

Zunfthaus zur Meisen in Zurich with decorations by Franz Ludwig Wind

Franz Ludwig Wind was born on November 14, 1719 as the son of Anton Wind, who came from Reutte in Tyrol . Between 1735 and 1741 he probably completed an apprenticeship as a sculptor in Tyrol and then went on a journey that, according to the family fama, is said to have extended to Palestine. On August 23, 1749 he applied for citizenship in his hometown of Kaiserstuhl. In 1755 Franz Ludwig Wind made the two urns for the garden wall and ten grimaces for the windows of the Meisen guild house in Zurich. The main work of Wind was the decorative elements and grimaces of the Marschallhof in Kaiserstuhl from 1764 onwards, which were knocked off until the end of the 19th century. In 1773, Franz Ludwig Wind designed the facade of the provost's office in Zurzach. The portal of Schloss Schwarzwasserstelz from 1776 is also attributed to Franz Ludwig Wind.

As has been customary in the region for centuries, Franz Ludwig Wind worked both in stone and in wood. His outstanding woodwork includes the pulpit in the parish church of Kaiserstuhl from 1756 and side altars for the church of St. Michael in Würenlingen from 1773. Stylistically, Ludwig Wind's work can be assigned to the Rococo decorative style.
