Franz Mandl (soccer player)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Mandl (born August 4, 1916 in Vienna - † February 4, 1988 ) was an Austrian soccer player and winner of the silver medal with the Austrian amateur national team at the 1936 Olympic Games .

Life

Mandl was one of only four Viennese on the roster of the Austrian Olympic team from 1936, which consisted mainly of players from the federal state clubs. Although he came from a professional club with Vienna , Mandl, who came from an old Heurigen dynasty in Döbling , was a real amateur throughout his career and played football purely as a hobby. Coach Jimmy Hogan and Ludwig Hussak put him in the squad for the Olympic Games in Berlin, although he had never played a selection game before. As a substitute he was only used in the semifinal game against Poland , in which he was able to contribute a goal to the 3-1 victory of the Austrians.

Despite this success, after the games he devoted himself mainly to his work as a tavern innkeeper, but also remained loyal to his Vienna. In the 1937/38 season he finally made a few appearances in the fighting team as a substitute for Willibald Schmaus and finished fifth in the championship with the Döblingern. The defender celebrated his greatest success at club level by winning the championship in the game year 1943/44 in which he - still as a pure amateur - made a few appearances in the combat team.

After his active career as a soccer player, Franz Mandl took care of the sporting matters of Vienna for some time as section head. He later related how he got this position: "During a board meeting in Vienna I went to the toilet. When I came back, I was made head of the section in my absence."
