Franz Massak (born March 4, 1804 in Nechwalitz , Bohemia , † June 4, 1875 in Vienna ) was a military bandmaster and composer .

Life

He came to Vienna in 1818, where he received lessons from Jakob Ullmann , Anton Plachy and, from 1825, from Joseph Drechsler and August Swoboda. From 1826 to 1869 Massak was the military bandmaster of Infantry Regiment 39 and 49. He appeared with his band in Viennese entertainment venues as early as 1834, also together with Johann Strauss (father) and Joseph Lanner . He was probably the first Kapellmeister to play with military musicians in strings in Vienna in 1835. He was the only bandmaster to publish dance compositions in the 1830s for the Mechetti music publisher in Vienna. In his travel report, Josef Sawerthal calls Massak a "military bandmaster par excellence".
