Franz Novy

Franz Novy (born September 28, 1900 in Vienna ; † November 14, 1949 ibid) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and a leading city councilor in Vienna.

Novy was born into a family of construction workers in Ottakring and learned the plastering trade. Novy joined the social democratic movement in 1914, became secretary of the construction workers 'movement in 1924 and took over the chairmanship of the construction workers' union in 1929. Novy had already been elected to the Ottakring District Council in 1927, and between 1932 and 1934 he was also a member of the Vienna City Council. After the suppression of the February fighting, Novy had to leave Austria for political reasons and first went to Brno, where he worked with his teacher Otto Bauer . Novy returned illegally to Austria several times and finally emigrated to Sweden in March 1938 , where he worked as a construction worker. In 1942 he moved to London .

Novy was active in the exile movement and was elected chairman on March 7, 1943 by the general assembly of the “Austrian Labor Club”. As a result, under his chairmanship in November 1943, the Austrian Representative Committee was constituted, which campaigned for the liberation of Austria. After returning via Paris in 1945, Novy was a member of the Vienna state parliament and local council from December 13, 1945 and was appointed to the state government of Körner II on February 14, 1946 as the leading city councilor for building matters (administrative group VI). In 1947 he took over the chairmanship of the SPÖ Vienna as regional chairman.

Novy was a councilor and town councilor until his death. He led the reconstruction of the destroyed Vienna and had the first large housing estates built on the outskirts ( Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung and the Hirschstetten and Stadlau settlements). In addition, the Gänsehäufel lido was built under his aegis . After his death, Novy was buried in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 14C, No. 17). In memory of him, the Novy-Hof and the Novytherme were named after him, in the Novy-Hof there is a monument to the politician.
