Franz Olck

Franz Theodor Olck (born November 25, 1841 in Königsberg ; † November 24, 1905 there ) was a German classical philologist .

life and work

Franz Olck, the son of the merchant H. Olck and grandson of the Reformed pastor Christian Heinrich Olck (1753-1804), attended the Collegium Fridericianum from 1854 to 1860 and then studied Protestant theology and classical philology at the University of Königsberg . He spent the summer semester of 1862 at the University of Heidelberg . He did not complete his studies with a doctorate , but only with the teaching examination in Latin, Greek and religious studies.

After a year as a candidate for education at the Realschule auf der Burg in Königsberg, Olck Michaelis went to the grammar school in Thorn as a full teacher in 1865 . In 1867 he returned to the Burg Gymnasium as a full teacher, where he worked until his retirement on April 1, 1894. In 1884 he was appointed high school professor.

Olck's scientific work focused on Roman literature ( Horace ) as well as ancient chronology and meteorology . His specialty were ancient agriculture and botany . From 1893 until his death he wrote 90 articles in this area for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Studies . Because of his death, he was no longer able to publish a monograph entitled The Vegetables of the Greeks and Romans .
