Franz Romer (captain)
Franz Romer (* 1899 in Dettingen ; † 1928 at Saint Thomas ) was the first person to cross the Atlantic in a folding boat in 1928 .
Life
For his daring venture, the sea captain Romer used a sailable Klepper boat about 6.40 m long and 1 m wide. The vehicle weighed 73 kg. Romer needed 58 days (June 10th to July 31st) for the route from Las Palmas on Gran Canaria to the Caribbean island of Saint Thomas .
Romer set out on a journey to New York in September 1928, despite a hurricane warning . He has been missing since September 11, 1928.
In Konstanz-Dettingen a street and a festival hall are named after him, since 2001 a memorial plaque commemorates him.
