Franz Sales Englhofer (* 1834 in Graz ; † April 15, 1914 ibid) was an Austrian confectionery manufacturer ("Firn").

Life

After attending lower secondary school, Englhofer began an apprenticeship with his uncle in 1848, whose business he took over after his uncle's death in 1863. As early as 1851 he had founded a coffee shop in Graz. In 1867 he expanded it to include a coffee bottling plant.

In 1872 he founded the Catholic journeyman's association for the Duchy of Styria based on the model of Adolph Kolping .

In 1882, Englhofer handed over the management of his company largely to his sons. In 1888 he became an honorary member of the newly founded Catholic student association KÖHV Carolina Graz in the ÖCV .

Englhofer became known throughout Austria with the "Englhofer Sugar Factory" founded in 1909. FS Englhofer Zuckerwarenfabrik KG, later FS Englhofer Zuckerwaren GesmbH, was the market leader in the candy segment in Austria for a long time and remained family-owned until it was sold to Nestlé in 1997 . Nestlé sold the company on to the German August Storck KG in 2000 , to which it still belongs to this day. Storck markets the traditional products “Firn”, “Arosa”, “Eiszapfen” and “Wiener Zuckerl” mainly in Austria.
