Franz Schaffer (geographer)

Franz Schaffer (born November 12, 1937 in Chodau , Czechoslovakia , † February 25, 2020 ) was a German geographer . From 1973 to 2003 he taught as a full professor for social and economic geography at the University of Augsburg .

biography

In 1957, Schaffer began teaching geography, biology and chemistry at the Technical University of Munich. From 1963 to 1967, after graduating, worked there as an assistant at the Institute of Geography and did his doctorate in 1966. After his habilitation in 1971, he was appointed full professor at the Chair of Social and Economic Geography at the University of Augsburg until 2003. Since 1977 Schaffer has been a member of the Swabian Research Association and since 1980 of the State Planning Advisory Board in the Bavarian State Ministry for State Development and Environmental Issues.

In 1998 he was awarded the environmental medal for special services to regional development and environmental protection in Bavaria. The Istanbul Technical University (YILDIZ) awarded him a Medal of Honor for the development of new methods for sustainable spatial development.

Schaffer published numerous papers and worked among other things. a. with problems of comparing cultures. In 2005 he was the first German to be awarded the Özel-Hizmet Prize of the Association of Turkish Cultural Associations in Europe , which is considered to be Islamist and nationalist for "his special services to German-Turkish friendship and the long-term promotion of Turkish cultural relations" .

On June 3, 2008, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services to the University of Augsburg, regional development and the integration of foreigners .
