Franz Sondheimer
Franz Sondheimer (born May 17, 1926 in Stuttgart , † February 11, 1981 in Stanford (California) ) was a British chemist of German origin.
life and work
Sondheimer emigrated to Great Britain with his family in 1937 before being persecuted by the National Socialists. He studied chemistry in London at Imperial College .
In 1948 he worked for Robert B. Woodward at Harvard University . In 1952 he took over the position previously held by Carl Djerassi at Syntex . In 1956 he was appointed to the Israeli Weizmann Institute . In 1963 he returned to the University of Cambridge in Great Britain, after which he went to London University College in 1967 .
His research areas were the synthesis of steroids and annulenes . In 1951 he was involved in the first total synthesis of non-aromatic steroids by Woodward (independently this was achieved around the same time by the group of Robert Robinson in England). In 1966 he became a member of the Leopoldina .
His well-known students include Kyriacos Costa Nicolaou and Raphael Mechoulam .
He died in 1981 while on sabbatical at Stanford University .
Awards
- In 1960 he received the Israel Prize .
- He was awarded the Corday Morgan Medal by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1961 .
- The Society of German Chemists awarded him the Adolf von Baeyer Medal .
- 1976 American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry
