Franz Wagner (born March 9, 1948 in Felsberg ) is a former German handball player .

life and career

Franz Wagner grew up in the small town of Felsberg in northern Hesse in what is now the Schwalm-Eder district and began playing handball in 1958, at that time still on the large field. In 1964 he was runner-up in North Hesse with the A-youth team from Eintracht Felsberg and soon afterwards played a major role in the rise of the Felsberg men's team to the Hessen Association League. The Felsberg team reached their climax in 1969 when they were promoted to the field handball Oberliga Südwest, the second highest division in Germany at the time.

In 1971 he moved to KSV Baunatal in the indoor handball Regionalliga Südwest and took second place in the table with this team. After his return to Eintracht Felsberg in 1973 and another short guest appearance at KSV Baunatal, he joined the neighboring regional league team TSV Jahn Gensungen in April 1977 .

With Jahn Gensungen he celebrated his greatest successes, with the high point of promotion to the 1st Bundesliga in 1978. In the Bundesliga season 1978/79 he scored 91 goals in 24 games, including 18 by seven meters. For Gensungen and the subsequent syndicate HSG Gensungen / Felsberg he hunted goals in over 600 games until 1991, before he switched again to KSV Baunatal as a player-coach. In his last competitive game on March 28, 1992, shortly after his 44th birthday, he hit the opposing goal six times at the end of his career.

A retrospective quote from Franz Wagner on the Bundesliga season: “First of all, I remember our appearance in Kiel. When I entered the Ostseehalle , which was sold out with 7,000 spectators , I said to myself, Franz, all the drudgery in training was worth it. I still remember our season opener in Gummersbach very well. We lost 14:25, but the world champions Deckarm , Wunderlich , Fey , Rauer and Heiner Brand played against our opponents . "

Until his retirement, Franz Wagner worked as a group leader in the repair shop of the Deutsche Bundesbahn in Kassel. He has been married to Brigitte since 1976. The couple lives in the Altenbrunslar district of Felsberg and has a daughter, a son and two grandchildren.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, his parent club Eintracht Felsberg made him an honorary member.
