Franz Wegner

Franz Joachim Wegner (born June 15, 1940 in Dessau ) is professor emeritus for theoretical physics at the University of Heidelberg .

Live and act

Franz Wegner received his doctorate in 1968 under Wilhelm Brenig at the Technical University of Munich on the subject of "The Heisenberg model in the paramagnetic area and at the critical point". He then did research as a postdoc a. a. at Forschungszentrum Jülich in Herbert Wagner's group and at Brown University with Leo Kadanoff . He has been a professor in Heidelberg since 1974.

The focus of his scientific work is statistical physics , in particular the theory of phase transitions and renormalization group theory (functional renormalization group with A. Houghton 1973). The "Wegner exponent" named after him is of fundamental importance when it comes to describing corrections to the asymptotic scale behavior in the vicinity of phase transitions. Wegner also "invented" basic lattice theory models in 1971 , for the original development of which Kenneth Wilson is often considered the pioneer (the resulting method is nowadays used extensively in the simulation of quantum chromodynamics ). In mathematics, the "Wegner inequality" for the spectral theory of disturbed systems is known.

Honors

Wegner's excellent research is u. a. Honored with the Walter Schottky Prize in 1976, with membership in the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences in 2000 and the Max Planck Medal in 1986 . In 1991 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . For 2015 he was awarded the Lars Onsager Prize .
