Wilhelm Brenig
Wilhelm JR Brenig (born January 4, 1930 in Stadtoldendorf ) is a German physicist and emeritus professor for theoretical physics at the Technical University of Munich .
Wilhelm Brenig received his doctorate in 1955 from the University of Göttingen under Richard Becker on the subject of the coupling forces between the atoms in a solid body . In 1961 he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich with a thesis on a nuclear physics topic and in the same year was appointed to the full professorship for theoretical physics as the successor to Gerhard Hettner . From 1970 to 1978 he worked on leave in Munich at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, of which he was also the first director. In 2005 he retired.
The focus of his scientific work is theoretical solid state physics , especially surface physics , statistical physics and scattering theory.
His (now two-volume) textbook Statistical Theory of Heat is now a standard textbook in course lectures on theoretical physics. Many of his academic students, whether diploma students, doctoral students or postdocs, have been appointed professors of theoretical physics , including Herbert Wagner , Franz Wegner , Heinz Horner , Eberhard K. Riedel , Hans-Jürgen Mikeska and Kurt Schönhammer .
His older son Wolfram Brenig is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig and his younger son Bertram Brenig is Professor of Molecular Biology of Farm Animals at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and head of the Veterinary Institute of the Georg-August University of Göttingen .
Wilhelm Brenig has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1981 .
