The Veterinary Institute ( Georg-August-Universität Göttingen ) was founded in 1771 by Johann Christian Erxleben . It is the first and oldest university veterinary training facility in Germany. It had developed from the equestrian lectures in the riding stables, which were the first of its kind in Europe.

In the course of its history, the Veterinary Institute has belonged to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Faculty of Human Medicine and, since the establishment of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August University in Göttingen, it has belonged to the Agricultural Sciences.

The directors of the Veterinary Institute were Prof. Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben (1771–1777), Karl Friedrich Lappe (1816–1854), Hubert Jacob Esser (1875–1921), Sigmund Schermer (1922–1955), Eilhard Mitscherlich (1955–1978) , Horst Schimmelpfennig (1982–1990) and Bertram Brenig since 1993. In the years after Lappe left the company in 1854 until Esser filled the chair for Vieharzneykunde in 1875, the Veterinary Institute was run by six inspectors and part-time directors.

From 1821 to 2005 the Veterinary Institute was located at Groner Landstrasse 2-4 next to the Zoology Department on Berliner Strasse.

The Veterinary Institute has been in Burckhardtweg 2 on the north campus of the University of Göttingen since 2005. Research focuses include genome analysis in domestic animals, clinical molecular biology , reproductive and biotechnology , infectious diseases , molecular microbiology and prion research .
