Bertram Brenig (born December 18, 1959 in Munich ) is a German veterinarian , molecular geneticist and biotechnologist .

Life

Brenig attended the Humboldt Gymnasium in Vaterstetten . From 1979 to 1984 he studied veterinary medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna . In 1987 he was in Munich with the work of cloning mikroinjizierbarer gene constructs and their detection in transgenic animals to Dr. med. vet. PhD . In 1993 he completed his habilitation there. In the same year he received a call to the chair for molecular biology of farm animals at the Georg-August University of Göttingen , and also director of the Veterinary Institute of the Georg-August University of Göttingen . In 2001 he received the veterinary certification for molecular genetics and biotechnology.

He is the son of the physicist Wilhelm Brenig and the brother of the physicist Wolfram Brenig .

Act

Brenig et al. a. through the discovery of specific nucleic acids in the serum of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) sick cattle and the first live test for BSE developed from it (GLT, Göttingen live test). In 2016 he was also able to clear up two major fatal genetic defects in Holstein Friesian cattle . In 2017, Brenig succeeded in elucidating the genetic cause of Morgagni's cataract . Brenig is still an internationally sought-after specialist in forensic veterinary medicine .

Since 2005 he has been co-editor and since 2008 associate editor of the scientific journals BMC Genetics ( BioMed Central ), BMC Veterinary Research and Genetics and Molecular Biology (GMB). In addition, since 2008 member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Zoology .

From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety . Brenig was also a Senator of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2003 to 2009 and a member of the DFG Approval and Main Committee. At the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen Brenig a. a. as a member of the budget and planning commission, in the Senate and again as dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences from 1997 to 2000 and 2008 to 2011 . Brenig was a co-founder of the biotechnology company Eurofins Medigenomix GmbH .

In addition, Brenig is or was a member of many national and international organizations and commissions, e. B. Member of the Expert Commission of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD (Biotechnology in Livestock Breeding, 1989–1993), Member of the Technology Council of the Federal Government (1996), Treasurer of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG 2000–2006), Treasurer of the Society for Animal Science (GfT, 2000–2003), member of the International Research Advisory Committee (IRAC) of the Alberta Prion Research Initiative (APRI, Canada) from 2005 to 2008, member of the College of External Review (CER) of the Prion Institute (Alberta , Canada) since 2008, President of the International Society for Animal Genetics (ISAG 2006–2010). He has been an expert since 2012 and has been the deputy chairman of the scientific commission of the Einstein Foundation Berlin since 2015 .

Several of his academic students have been appointed professors in the fields of life sciences, molecular genetics and veterinary medicine, including Tosso Leeb , Stephan Neumann , Christoph Knorr, Kesinee Gatphayak , Rifat Morina , Artur Luiz da Costa da Silva and Ekkehard Schütz .
