Anvil (English " anvil ") is a Canadian heavy metal band. She is now considered to be one of the pioneers of Speed Metal , which started rolling in the early 1980s.

history

Anvil's origins are in Toronto , where Steve Kudlow and Robb Reiner began making music together in April 1973. In 1978 the first permanent lineup was formed under the name LIPS: Steve "Lips" Kudlow ( vocals , guitar ), Robb Reiner ( drums ), Dave Allison (guitar, vocals) and Ian Dickson ( bass ).

In 1981 the band released an independent album called Hard 'n' Heavy . Shortly after they signed a record deal with Attic Records , the band changed their name to Anvil, as a disco band existed at the same time under the name Lipps, Inc. The album Hard 'n' Heavy has now been released as a debut on Attic.

While the band was still playing a less conspicuous hard rock until then, that changed fundamentally under the influence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal with the second album Metal on Metal, which was released in 1982 . The band clearly increased in hardness and above all in speed. The change of style was underlined again with the 1983 work Forged in Fire , whereby Kudlow's idiosyncratic vocals and Reiner's precise, powerful double-bass drumming proved to be particularly sound-defining. The two albums produced by Chris Tsangarides are considered the band's classics.

Instead of the hoped-for breakthrough, the band then disappeared for a few years, only to return to the US label Metal Blade Records in 1987 with the album Strength of Steel . After a few more releases and the interim exit of Allison, Anvil switched to Maximum Records in 1991 , the Canadian label of the then Helix manager William Seip. From 1996 to 2007 Anvil were under contract with Hypnotic Records in Canada and Massacre Records in Germany. However , the band could no longer build on their status of the early 1980s (including appearance at the Monsters of Rock Festival 1982 in Donington ).

In 2009 they played a few appearances for AC / DC on their Black Ice World Tour in North America, as well as supporting some gigs for Saxon in Great Britain . On October 6th of the same year, on the occasion of the DVD release of the documentary Anvil! The Story of Anvil made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O'Brien playing Metal on Metal . On October 18th they headlined the Sanctuary Stage at the Loud Park Festival in Chiba ( Japan ).

In June and July 2010 they went on a headlining tour through Europe. Anvil played in the UK, Spain , Belgium , Switzerland , Germany and the Netherlands . They also played at festivals in Finland , Sweden , France , Italy and Germany.

The album Hope in Hell was released in May 2013 . The new bassist Sal Italiano was heard for the first time on this album. He joined the band after Glenn "Five" Gyorffy left the band in 2012 due to artistic differences. Hope in Hell , like Juggernaut of Justice before, was produced by Bob Marlette, who, according to Kudlow, contributed a lot to the songwriting and especially to the arrangements.

meaning

Anvil's early works Metal on Metal and Forged in Fire are considered formative for Speed and Thrash Metal. The albums came out before the debuts of the genre classics by Metallica and Slayer . Despite the time advantage, Anvil remained an underground band.

documentary

Anvil was released in 2009 ! The Story of a Friendship , directed by Sacha Gervasi , a film about the band that received many positive reviews and brought Anvil back into the public eye. The documentary was released in German cinemas on March 11, 2010.

Trivia

  • The intro of the instrumental piece March of the Crabs (on Metal on Metal ) served as the closing music for the ARD science magazine Globus in the late 1980s .
  • The album titles Anvils - with the exception of Backwaxed , which is not authorized by the band - always consist of three words, the first and last of which form an alliteration .
  • No metal band formed in the late 70s or early 80s stayed together with their original line-up as long as Anvil. The band was formed in 1978 and the line-up remained unchanged until Dave Allison left in 1989 - and with this time of eleven years even surpassed Slayer, who was formed from 1981 to Dave Lombardo's departure in 1991 (with the caveat that Lombardo was there during this time left the group for a few weeks) only played together for almost ten years.
