Franz Wirz (mining engineer)
Franz Wirz (born November 13, 1802 in Ehrenbreitstein ; † January 18, 1863 in Luxembourg ) was a German mining engineer who had worked in Luxembourg since 1830.
Life
After attending school in Koblenz , Franz Wirz studied mineralogy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and mining at the Bergakademie Freiberg . In 1822 he became a member of the Corps Rhenania Bonn . In 1827 he became head of a gold mine in Aruba . In 1829 he was appointed as a mining engineer to the General Inspection of Mining and Metallurgy for Belgium and Holland in The Hague . In the same year he managed the successful rescue of buried miners in Seraing near Liège . In 1830 he was appointed head of the mining administration of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . In 1840 he became engineer en chief and in 1843 chief engineer of public works in Luxembourg. In 1857 he was appointed to the Luxembourg State Council .
