Franz Xaver von Bendel

Franz Xaver von Bendel (born November 25, 1713 in Graz ; † September 10, 1800 there ) was an Austrian Jesuit and poet.

Life

Franz Xaver, Edler von Bendel, was a son of the inner Austrian court chamber councilor Heinrich Edler von Bendel and Franziska von Zunggo. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1729 and received his doctorate in theology in 1744. He taught poetry and rhetoric in Graz in 1746 and 1747 , philosophy in Linz and Passau and theology in Agram and Klagenfurt . In 1763 he became sub-minister, grammar school prefect and procurator at the Theresian Knight Academy in Vienna . After the Jesuit order was abolished in 1773, he retired in Graz.

He was a trusted friend of the writer Michael Denis and the Archbishop of Vienna, Count Hohenwart . He had traveled through Germany and Italy and spoke French, Italian and English in addition to German and Latin. Until his death he was active in literature, u. a. he wrote Latin verses. Prosopopeja illustrium Styriae Heroum was printed by him in Graz in 1746 and 1747 in two parts. In the manuscript he left Carmina epica , the play Innocence, Friendship and Love and other poems and plays.
