Johann Baptist von Winklern

Johann Baptist von Winklern (wrongly also Wincklern ; born January 13, 1768 in Murau , † August 22, 1841 in Pöls ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic clergyman , theologian and historian .

Life

Winklern was the son of a Schwarzenberg iron governor. In 1776 he came to the kk united seminar in Graz, where he received his education. In 1783, when the seminary was converted into the general seminary for the formation of priests , he left it. After completing high school he studied philosophy , mathematics , physics and natural law at the University of Graz . From January 1, 1786 he was then an intern at the First Austrian State Property Administration. From October 1, 1786 he came to the kk state rule Millstatt as a real clerk .

Winklern decided to become a priest in September 1789 and entered the general seminary in Graz. In 1792 he was ordained a priest . He then worked for three years as a chaplain in Anger , then for about a year and a half as a pastor at the parish church of St. Peter near Graz , before he was appointed actuary and catechist at the girls' school in the Ursuline convent in Graz on June 30, 1797 . On December 1, 1800, he was employed as a real curate at the Ursuline Monastery.

On April 27, 1801, Winklern received the patronage parish of Sankt Johann im Saggautal from the Prince-Bishop of Seckau Joseph Adam von Arco . In 1810 he was promoted to the princely Schwarzenberg patronage parish of Unzmarkt and in 1819 was appointed dean . In 1832 he finally came to Pöls as the main pastor and dean . He left his extensive library to the parish in Pöls.

  • Sermons on Sundays and public holidays throughout the year , 3 volumes, Graz 1797.
  • Explanation of the Sunday and feast day Gospels, for use in schools and applicable for early sermons, as well as for private building , 2 volumes, Graz 1800.
  • Complete prayer booklet for the youth for all times and feasts of the entire Catholic church year. With pictures , Graz 1810.
  • Representations and prayers for the holy. Mass, in honor and adoration of the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ , Graz 1815.
State historical works

In addition to various articles for the Steiermärkische Zeitschrift (e.g. Die Hauptpfarre Pöls in Upper Styria , 1836) he wrote the following books:

  • Biographical and literary news from the writers and artists who were born in the Duchy of Styria and who lived in or outside it and are still alive. A contribution to the national literary history of Austria , Ferstl, Graz 1810.
  • Chronological history of the Duchy of Styria , Ferstl, Graz 1819.
