Franz von Scheiger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Edler von Scheiger (born February 22, 1891 in Graz , † 1960 ibid) was a German - Austrian engineer and diplomat .

Life

Franz Scheiger, a descendant of Joseph Edler von Scheiger , lived in Albania from 1916 to 1944 ; in the First World War from 1916 as an Austro-Hungarian officer, then as a road construction engineer . From 1923 he was a commercial attaché member of the German legation in Tirana and from 1929 a German citizen.

Scheiger was fluent in Albanian and associated with the most important Albanian personalities in culture and politics and therefore seemed useful for German intentions in the 1940s. For this he was appointed political advisor to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin. But his knowledge and experience were not used at first. It was not until 1943, in preparation for the German occupation of Albania, that his diplomatic skills were recognized and included at short notice. He was sent to Kosovo , ostensibly to check the water, but above all to establish contacts with the Albanian gang leaders and politicians and to win them over for the Germans against the Italians.

After the end of the war, Scheiger lived in Graz again.

Culturally, historically and politically interested and educated, Scheiger collected monographs and periodicals on the history of Albania and its neighboring countries. His library is located at the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies . An important coin collection was also found in his estate.
