The Fraunhofer Institution for Microsystems and Solid State Technologies (Fraunhofer EMFT) is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . The facility is based in Munich and conducts applied research and development on sensors and actuators for people and the environment. The facility has many years of experience in the fields of microelectronics and microsystem technology .

Fraunhofer EMFT is a member of the Fraunhofer Group for Microelectronics (VµE), to which ten Fraunhofer institutes and three Fraunhofer facilities belong.

history

In 1974 the Fraunhofer Institute for Solid State Technology IFT was founded. Technologies for semiconductor production were developed here. Further fields of activity were sensor technology, communication technology and microstructure technology. In 1999 the Fraunhofer IFT was dissolved and divided into three independent areas. The area on Hansastrasse, today's Fraunhofer EMFT, became part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM, Berlin. On July 1, 2010, Fraunhofer EMFT emerged as an independent institution from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM, Munich branch.

On March 31, 2015, the name of the Fraunhofer facility for modular solid-state technologies was changed to the Fraunhofer facility for microsystems and solid-state technologies . The abbreviation "EMFT" was retained.

Locations

The institute is based in Munich and runs a working group in Regensburg.

organization

The institute has focused its research and development offers in five business areas.

  • "Sensor materials" under the direction of Sabine Trupp
  • "Sensors and actuators" under the direction of Ignaz Eisele
  • “Microdosing Systems” under the direction of Martin Richter
  • "Flexible Systems" under the provisional management of Christoph Kutter
  • "Design and Test" under the direction of Linus Maurer

Head: Christoph Kutter

research

The institute has summarized its research and development competencies in five core competency areas:

  • Functional molecules
  • Silicon technologies
  • Film technologies
  • Micropumps
  • Systems and prototypes

Each of these core competencies provides the basis for generating new types of sensors and actuators. The greatest strength of Fraunhofer EMFT, however, lies in the interplay of competencies: Because innovative solutions often arise precisely at the limits or through the combination of different technologies. This interdisciplinary research approach enables tailor-made solutions for different business fields and areas of application.

facts and figures

The total budget in 2014 was around 11 million euros. The institute currently employs 91 people. Of these, 67 people work in the scientific field and 24 employees in administration, IT, workshop and technology. On average, there are also 21 student assistants from various institutions working at the facility to write their doctoral, diploma or master's thesis and to work on research topics at Fraunhofer EMFT.

Cooperations

Technology networks

In order to guarantee efficient and effective cooperation with industry, three different technology networks are linked to Fraunhofer EMFT:

  • The Bavarian Demonstration Center Polytronics (BDP)
  • The development center for multifunctional on-top technologies (MOTT) for standard silicon CMOS
  • The Center for Microsystem Integration Munich (CMM)

Colleges

The institute operates research and project collaborations with several universities. Strategic collaborations exist with

Industrial cooperation

New types of joint research and development such as open innovation have been practiced at Fraunhofer EMFT for years with industrial partners. Several companies have entered into strategic partnerships with the establishment - including Siemens AG , Ketek GmbH, Panasonic , Thin Materials and TÜV Süd .
