Cheeky Mario Art Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Freche Mario Art Prize is a competition for blasphemy works of art in various genres (including cartoons, sculptures, texts, cabaret contributions, pieces of music, short films). It aims to abolish Section 166 of the Criminal Code ( insulting denominations, religious societies and ideological associations ). It has been awarded since 2008 and is endowed with prize money of up to 6,000 euros.

History and organizers

The art prize was donated in 2008 by Wolf Steinberger, the then chairman of the Association for Freedom of the Spirit (bfg) Munich. In addition to the bfg Munich, the art prize has since been advertised, financed and organized by an open circle of organizations. Most recently (2019) the circle consisted of bfg Munich, the Gallery of Church Criticism , the Giordano Bruno Foundation , the ambush culture stage and the 84 GHz radio station. The coordinator is the entrepreneur Assunta Tammelleo.

In 2017, Alibri-Verlag published an illustrated book with over 50 selected works of art from the competitions between 2008 and 2016. The Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote in 2016 that the entries for the Frechen Mario Art Prize were “funny for shooting, others thoughtful, others just plain true and therefore painful ”.

Since the Islamist-motivated terrorist attack on the editors of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015, an annual charity memorial evening has been held on the day of the attack on January 7th to collect money for the art prize. In 2020, Gerhard Haderer was the event's patron. Cabaret artist HG Butzko was one of the contributors to the benefit event on January 7, 2020 . On this he said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung: "As long as we can still be accused of denigrating the Federal President or religious beliefs under the flimsy argument of wanting to keep public peace, there is still a lot to do."

target

According to the organizers, the art prize was launched to underline the demand for the abolition of Section 166 StGB ( abuse of denominations, religious societies and ideological associations ). Particularly in times of fear of supposedly religiously based attacks, it is important to maintain and promote the freedom of expression enshrined in the Basic Law . We are looking for works of art (including cartoons, sculptures, texts, cabaret contributions, pieces of music, short films) that deal artistically with supernatural ideas and “so-called eternal truths” without “scissors in the head”.

Prize money

Depending on the amount of donations, the organizers distributed EUR 3,000 to EUR 6,000 per invitation to three award winners.
