Fred Surville

Fred Surville (Fritz Rüegg) (born September 8, 1910 in Lausanne , † October 23, 1990 in Casablanca ) was a Swiss film director , film editor and interior designer .

life and work

Surville completed his training at the Lausanne Conservatory and then worked at the Theâtre de la Madeleine in Paris . From 1929 to 1930 he worked in the Barrandov film studios in Prague .

In 1931 he was assistant director to Nikita Balieff and made his debut in 1934 as assistant director in the film by Jean Choux , when he was making the film Maternity (Maternité) . In 1933, Surville founded the avant-garde group “Le Studio” in Geneva .

Surville did an internship at Tobis-Film in Berlin . Since he rejected National Socialism , he returned to Switzerland in 1937 and directed the short film Richesse de la terre in 1939 . He then worked in Geneva as a film editor for the “Cinégram”. His film Santorin received the film award at the Venice International Film Festival in 1939 .

In 1941 Surville directed the film Manouche . Adrien Porchet was the chief surgeon ; Gerald Chamberlain from London was responsible for the sound recordings. The production company "Sarco AG" shot the film in Lausanne and in the Valais Alps . The script was written by Francis Bernier and Camille Freytag. Yva Bella , and Pierre Dudan starred .

He made several films with Carl Junghans in Prague. Surville directed the French version of And Life Goes On . He later became an assistant to Jean Lemur . Surville traveled to Greece where he made five documentaries.

In Switzerland, Surville shot Güter der Erde and was most recently assistant director to Jacques Feyder in A Woman Disappears (Une femme disparait) . After the Second World War, Surville moved to Morocco where he worked as an interior designer.
