Sir Frederick Dobson Middleton (born November 4, 1825 in Belfast , Northern Ireland , † January 25, 1898 in London , England ) was a British general and served in various locations of the British Empire . He was best known for his role in the Northwest Rebellion in Canada . From 1884 to 1890 he was Commander in Chief of the British Colonial Army in Canada. During the Northwest Rebellion in 1885, he suffered a defeat at the Battle of Fish Creek , but was able to defeat a short time later the numerically more than one to two inferior and much worse armed insurgent Métis in the Battle of Batoche . For this he was knighted on August 25, 1885 by Queen Victoria as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). In 1890 he stumbled upon an affair about a Métis' merchandise stolen during the rebellion, quit his service and returned to England. In London he was appointed Guardian of the Crown Jewels and died in the same place in 1898.
