The Free State Cheetahs ( German:  Freistaat-Cheetahs ; formerly called Free State or Vrystaat ; currently also known as Toyota Free State Cheetahs for sponsorship reasons , Afrikaans : Vrystaat Jagluiperds ) are a South African rugby union team. It plays in the Currie Cup and its gaming operations are organized by the Free State Rugby Union (FSRU). The home games are played in the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein . The association provides players for the Central Cheetahs franchise team, who plays in the international Super 14 .

history

The Orange Free State Rugby Union, today the FSRU, was founded in 1895 and is one of the oldest regional associations in South Africa. The first final in the Currie Cup, however, was not reached until 1973 and lost there against the Northern Transvaal . The first of four victories followed in 1976, and several other finals were made in the years that followed. This was followed by seasons in which the Free State Cheetahs could not build on these successes. It was not until 2005 that the Currie Cup won again. The following year, the profit was shared with the Blue Bulls after the final game ended in a 28:28 draw. In 2007 they achieved their third win in a row, in 2008 they failed in the semi-finals.
