The Freepsumer Meer is a former lake near the village of Freepsum in the East Frisian Krummhörn northwest of the seaport town of Emden .

Today, the term Freepsumer Meer describes an agricultural area which, after being drained, is still largely below sea level . In 1983 the lowest point of this area (−2.5 meters) was entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the lowest point in Germany . Since 1988, however, one point (−3.54 meters) in the community of Neuendorf-Sachsenbande in the Wilstermarsch in Schleswig-Holstein has been considered lower.

history

The Freepsumer Meer once belonged to the nearby Sielmönken Monastery . In the course of secularization , the chief Hoyko Manninga zu Pewsum came into possession of the sea in 1554 . The fish-rich water was obviously a welcome source of food for the kitchen of Manningaburg . This is the time in the vernacular common name "Kitchen Sea". In 1565 the water came to the East Frisian Count House.

In the period between 1611 and 1775, four attempts were made to dry the Freepsumer Sea using windmill power, following Dutch models . Only those interested in the Freepsumer Meer Company , founded in 1768 , finally achieved lasting success. In 1774, the drained land was distributed and around 100 years later the canon of long leases was also replaced. Two hundred years later - in 1974 - the Freepsumer Meer Company ceded its obligations to the I. Drainage Association Emden - based in Pewsum  - and in 1985 the remaining land.
