Freiberg Kärpf is a hunting banned area in the municipality of Glarus Süd , Canton Glarus in Switzerland . It is the oldest preserved hunting area (game reserve) in Europe and named after the Kärpf , a 2794  m above sea level. M. high mountain in the area. It was proclaimed in 1548 and the hunting ban is still in place today.

The game reserve is bordered by the Sernf and Linth valleys . In the south, the mountain range of Kärpf forms the border that dominates the area. The Mettmenalp and the Leglerhütte are located in the wildlife reserve . The game reserve covers an area of ​​106 km 2 . Ibex, chamois, deer, roe deer, marmots, golden eagles and bearded vultures are native to the wildlife reserve and can be observed on hikes. The wildlife sanctuary can be reached from the Schwanden district via the mountain road into the Niedertal valley . A cable car leads from the hamlet of Kies directly to 1,600  m above sea level. M. to Garichtisee , which the locals call Mettmensee . The reservoir was built between 1929 and 1931. The Sernf-Niederntal power plant in Schwanden processes the dammed water into electricity.
