The Free Evangelical School Zurich (short FES or outdated FESZ ) is a Protestant private school with two school buildings in the center of Zurich .

The school currently employs around 50 teachers and around 400 students in total , who are spread across 25 classes. The FES was founded in 1874, making it one of the oldest private schools in Zurich. According to its mission statement, the school proceeds from a " biblical image of man " and takes evangelical faith as its basis; however, it is expressly open to all population groups.

history

On February 14, 1874, the school was founded in the St. Anna Chapel . School started on May 5, 1874. This made the school a very old private school. The classroom was an overnight hostel for the homeless. In 1875 a small schoolhouse was built in Oetenbachgasse. At that time the FES had about 50 students. On May 7, 1882, the FES began to accept girls.

The construction of the schoolhouse on Waldmannstrasse began in 1897, and Robert Zollinger was commissioned to build it as the architect. Construction was completed in 1898. Shortly after graduation, the school got its first principal, Johannes Hofstetter. In 2004 the school rented a second school building, initially on Zollikerstrasse, and since 2012 on Kreuzstrasse.

According to its own statement, the school is one of the “most traditional schools in all of Zurich”.

School building on Waldmannstrasse (under monument protection)

The FES is currently in two locations in Zurich: on Waldmannstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of Bellevue, and on Kreuzstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of Kreuzplatz . The school building on Waldmannstrasse is a listed building ( AA3358 ).

From 1995 to 1996 the gym on Waldmannstrasse was converted into an auditorium.

In 2007, a new building was added to the listed building in Waldmannstrasse under the direction of the then Rector Peter Scheuermeier. There is a playground on the new building.

Monument protection

The building planned by Robert Zollinger as a school and office building has a strictly three-part facade. Above the high plinth, the wall surface is structured using a colossal arrangement, with an attic at the end . Most of the furnishings have been retained. Some rooms still have the original cupboards that were used when the school opened.
