The Free Voices was a German national newspaper that appeared in Klagenfurt from 1881 to 1938 .
history
On May 1, 1881, the newspaper appeared for the first time under the editor and publisher Allwin Matschnig. From 1881 to 1884 the newspaper had the addition Organ of the Progressive Party in Carinthia. Through struggle to victory! . What is possibly meant by struggle is explained in the first edition: "The ardent love for our glorious fatherland and for freedom, which glows through the members of the editorial team, will steel them in the struggle for progress and welfare of the country [...]". There, the cessation of the newspaper Blätter für die Alpenländer , published by Friedrich Vinzenz Leon , was named as the motive for founding the paper . The newspaper was first published by desPrinter Josef Muhr from Villach . Already in 1882 they switched to the publishing house of the bookseller Rudolf Bertschinger from Klagenfurt, which later became known under the name Heyn . Bertschinger also acted as editor from 1882.
On November 29, 1884, the passage through struggle finally became victory! painted. The orientation of the newspaper itself was described as liberal at the time . Johann Winner took over the editorial office for about a year, followed by Edmund Pummer in 1886. On April 3, 1886, the addition to German National Gazette for Carinthia was changed. Shortly thereafter, Josef Wolfgang Dobernig took over the role of editor . On September 22, 1886 the additions Fort with the foreign word! and write in German! added. On January 5, 1887, the word national was again deleted and the addition changed to Ein deutsches Blatt für Kärnten. , the two other additions remained. Dobernig took on the role of Bertschinger's editor.
On January 2nd, 1889, all other additions were finally removed except for Carinthia and switched to Johann Barthlmä Leon ́s print shop until this remaining addendum was finally removed on January 2nd, 1892. In 1895 Dobernig handed over the office of editor to Adolf Teichmann, who in turn was replaced by Josef Ch. Lackner in 1898. On April 1, 1908, the Free Voices and the Deutsche Kärntner Landes-Zeitung were merged. They now appeared together under the title Free Voices with the addition of the Deutsche Kärntner Landes-Zeitung . The pressure changed to the Gutenberghaus in Klagenfurt and meanwhile they described themselves as German-free . The Carinthian Press Association acted as the publisher from 1908. On September 14, 1920 the presentation changed and the addition Süddeutsch-Alpenlandisches Tagblatt was added. This was removed on January 1st, 1929. In 1923 the Free Voices Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft mbH took over the printing and from then on also acted as publisher. The editorial team changed to Alexander Schneider in 1925, to Josef Freisinger in 1930 and from 1931 to 1938 Heinz Paller and Raimund Wirnigg took turns as editor again and again.
From May 31, 1933, the newspaper was placed under preliminary censorship by the government under Engelbert Dollfuss . Heinz Paller justified this in his contribution with the role of the newspaper as "organ of the national opposition". On July 6, 1933, the word “ Vorzensur” was replaced by the comment “ under stricter submission requirements” . On January 12, 1934, the first edition of the newspaper was confiscated, whereupon a second edition was published. The note on censorship disappeared on June 17, 1937, but the censorship probably continued, because the newspaper appeared on March 12, 1938 with a censored front page. On March 13, 1938, the day after the Anschluss , the title of the editorial was "Towards the Greater German Reich!" The newspaper appeared on August 31, 1938 for the last time. In his closing article, Heinz Paller gave an overview of the history of the paper and saw the newspaper's task as fulfilled: “Greater Germany has become a reality. Victory is won. The task is done. ”The Carinthian border call succeeded the Free Votes.
