Johann Barthlmä Leon (* 22. May 1802 in Klagenfurt , † 10. November 1879 ) was an Austrian printers and publishing bookseller ( publishers ).

Life

Johann Barthlmä Leon was born on May 22, 1802 in the city of Klagenfurt in what was then the Archduchy of Austria . After four classes of high school, which he completed in his hometown, which is now part of the Austrian Empire , he trained as a printer and bookseller and subsequently ran the company of his father Johann Baptist Leon, the founder of the company later named "Johann Leon sen. ”, continued. After the father died in 1821, he initially continued the company for the widowed mother and then took it over independently in 1829, before handing it over to his two sons Friedrich Vinzenz and Johann in 1862 . The expansion and the addition of a lithographic establishment enabled increased publishing activities. In addition, various printing activities were carried out, including in the Slovenian language . His personal interest in historical and topographical publications also resulted in financial sacrifices. The Kärntnerische Zeitschrift (1818 to 1835), almost all volumes of the first scientific history of Carinthia by Gottlieb von Ankershofen , Heinrich Hermann and Karlmann Tangl , as well as his series of the Bishops of Lavant appeared in continuations through his publisher . Furthermore, the topographical publications by Joseph Wagner (1803–1861), such as the views of Carinthia and various others , appeared through his publishing house . From 1849 he also brought out the archive for patriotic history and topography . On November 10, 1879, Leon died at the age of 77 in Klagenfurt, the town he was born in, which is now part of Austria-Hungary .
