Fridolin Moritz Kordon (born September 15, 1869 in Vienna , † December 17, 1944 in Graz ), known as Frido Kordon , was an Austrian alpinist and writer.

Life

Frido Kordon was born to Fridolin Kordon and Maria Anna Brechtl. The father was a watchmaker and gold worker on Mariahilfer Strasse in Vienna and came from Weißenstein in Baden-Württemberg , the mother was the daughter of an innkeeper from Vienna. In 1871, just a few months after the birth of the second child Anna Helena Maria, the father died of pneumonia. The mother married the pharmacist Eduard Müllner, who was born in Linz in 1872. In the same year the family moved to Gmünd in Carinthia after Müllner had bought the pharmacy there from its founder Friedrich Scholz. From his mother's second marriage, Frido Kordon had 4 half-sisters: Emilie Augusta, Luise, Paula Anna and Theodora.

Frido Kordon completed elementary school in Gmünd and then switched to the lower grammar school in Klagenfurt before he began to work in his stepfather's pharmacy. This was followed by a degree in pharmacy in Graz , which Kordon completed as a Magister. After his military service in Vienna , Kordon moved back to Gmünd in 1891, where he worked as a provisional in the pharmacy of his mother, who was now again widowed. Ed. Müllner's widow Apotheke zum Hl. Geist at Hauptplatz 18 became his property in 1900. In the same year on September 3, 1900, he married Fanny Keber, the daughter of the house owner, who received the building as a wedding present.

Kordon, who was also active as a writer, founded the Gmünd AV section, whose chairman he remained for many years, and was a member of the municipal council from 1896 to 1914. He promoted tourism, which began in the valleys around Gmünd by, among other things, describing and illustrating his hiking experiences in the Lieser and Maltatal area. The reports were published in numerous newspapers. Among other things, he suggested the construction of the Osnabrück , Gießen and Kattowitzer huts and saw to it that the Schönau hunting lodges were converted into the Gmünder hut . The expansion of hiking trails and climbs in the area is also partly due to cordon.

Kordon revised and expanded the book Gmünd in Carinthia and its surroundings by Josef Fresacher and wrote brochures and leaflets about Gmünd. His lecture with 135 Skioptikon pictures , which he gave in Vienna's Urania , dates from 1903, when a flood disaster struck Kordon's homeland . The relief operation he initiated for the flood victims was so successful that in 1904 he received honorary citizenship of the municipality of Malta .

In 1897 and 1899 he accompanied the mountain painter ET Compton to the Hafner and Reisseck groups and described this hiking area. In 1914, Kordon sold his pharmacy in order to be able to devote himself entirely to writing. He moved to Graz, but regularly returned to Gmünd for long stays. Among other things, he wrote poems for festivals that were performed in Gmünd. In 1926 he published the guide to the Ankogel group including the Hochalmspitz, Hafner and Reisseck groups . Robert Hüttig was co-author.

Honors

In addition to the honorary citizenship of the municipality of Malta, Kordon also received the honorary citizenship of the city of Gmünd. He became honorary chairman of the AV section Gmünd and honorary member of various other Alpine Club sections. The Kordonspitz and the Frido-Kordon-Hütte on the Stubeck are named after Frido Kordon .
