The main children's home is a listed building by Max Taut at Ritterstrasse  69, corner of Alte Jakobstrasse 11-13, in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It consists of a bar-shaped main building along Ritterstraße, which is adjoined by a garden with five pavilions .

History and function of the building

The main children's home was the last major project that Max Taut won in a competition in 1963. After Taut's death in 1967, the planning for the building was continued by Fritz Bornemann , so that the home could be opened in 1969. The garden was designed by the landscape architect Hermann Mattern . After unrest, the children's home was closed again in 1974. The building complex was subsequently used by several different social institutions. In 2005 the building was rebuilt by the Mohr and Winterer Society of Architects and Feddersen Architects . 16 million euros will be built by 2007. Then the Freie Waldorfschule Kreuzberg e. V., a privately owned general education , public comprehensive school founded in 1985 . In the immediate vicinity of Max Taut's building complex, the Kreuzberg Waldorf School built a new building from 1989 to 1999 based on a design by the architect Christian Michael Küssner. In the course of the renovation, a second train and a dining room were added to the school. At the same time, primary energy savings of 272 MWh were made , which corresponds to a 55 percent reduction in CO 2 emissions . The Turkish-language theater Tiyatrom has also been located in the building complex of the former main children's home since 1984 .
