Location of the Freiherr von Fritsch barracks in Schleswig-Holstein |
The Freiherr von Fritsch barracks in Breitenburg-Nordoe in the Steinburg district near Itzehoe was a barracks of the Bundeswehr from 1956 to 2008.
history
From 1889 the property was used as a training and exercise area for the 9th field artillery regiment. During the Second World War, the StOÜbPl (training site) was used by the German Wehrmacht and after the end of the war by the British and then by the Danish army, before the Bundeswehr (1955) was introduced to use the area for training purposes.
The barracks was built in 1956 for the Bundeswehr and named after General Freiherr von Fritsch , who was Commander-in-Chief of the Army from 1936 to 1938 . Over the years, various units, including foreign troops, use the barracks and the subsequent StOÜbPl (training site).
The Bundeswehr units stationed until the mid-1970s were the "Panzer Grenadier Battalion 171", the "Rocket Artillery Battalion 650" and the "Training Center 11/4". This was followed by the "Observation Battalion 6" until 1981, the "Jägerbataillon 391" until 1991. In the period between 1958 and 1964, the "294th US Arty Group" and the "75th US Missile Detachment" were stationed parallel to the Bundeswehr units before they were relocated to Kellinghusen.
Subsequently, the barracks was mainly used by medical units. In 1991 medical battalion 6 of the 6th Panzer Grenadier Division arrived . 1997 the 6th Medical Regiment of the 14th Panzer Grenadier Division "Hanse". 2003 the 11th military regiment of the 14th Panzer Grenadier Division "Hanse". Further units were the repair battalion 16. Shortly before the closure, some renovations were carried out between 2001 and 2003.
On March 25, 1950, an accident occurred on the StOÜbPl in which four children were fatally injured while playing with an English dud (explosive grenade).
The adjacent military training area was marked as a “shooting range” as early as 1893.
Civil use after closure
A private investor acquired the site in 2009/10 and plans to build a residential complex there. The adjacent military training area was leased to the Nature Conservation Foundation . The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas in Schleswig-Holstein designated there in March 2013 the “ Inland Dunes Nature Reserve Nordoe ”.
