The Free Catholic Church is a church in the Catholic tradition with its seat in Munich and originates from the Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil . It is independent of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

The Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil was founded in 1945 by the former Roman Catholic Bishop of Botucatu Carlos Duarte Costa after his excommunication in the same year. Through the later Archbishop Johannes Peter Meyer it came to Germany in 1949 under the name of the Free Catholic Church . The headquarters were initially in Cologne and moved to Munich in 1976.

Teaching

The Free Catholic Church sees itself as part of the one Church of Jesus Christ and, as a non-Roman Catholic Church, feels obliged to the tradition of the early Church . According to their own statements, the bishops are legitimate successors of the Apostle Peter , since they have the valid apostolic succession . The acts of worship (celebration of mass, dispensing of the sacraments, weddings and funerals ) are held either in their own, in the ordinary Roman or in the extraordinary Roman rite. There is no obligation to be celibate .

According to information from the Religious Studies Media and Information Service (REMID), the Free Catholic Church in Germany had five parishes, four local groups and a little more than 400 members in 2005.

The Free Catholic Church is a registered association of the Free Catholic Church in Germany. V. based in Munich. It is subordinate to the Patriarchate of the Catholic Apostolic Church of Brazil. According to their statutes, the Primate Archbishop is at the head in Germany, followed by his vicar general , the priests and the consistory. The association is recognized as a non-profit organization and is financed from donations. The club rooms, designed as a church , are located in a former shop . The newsletter Die Sendung has been published since 1955 .

The Free Catholic Church works in Germany in the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Munich. It also oversees two missions in Manila and three communities in the United States in Los Angeles , Miami and Chicago.
