Voluntary departure

Voluntary departure refers to the voluntary compliance with an officially ordered departure obligation . This expression was chosen on January 19, 2007 for the German " Unwort des Jahres 2006". The decision was made by a jury made up of linguists in Köthen .

The term is used in connection with the treatment of rejected asylum seekers . According to the jury, “voluntary departure” refers to the fact that many rejected asylum seekers return to their homeland under duress before deportation . In fact, they have no other choice.

The expression was selected from a total of around 1130 suggestions.
