Freusburger mill

The Freusburger Mühle is a former hydropower- operated grain mill in the Freusburg district of the city of Kirchen in the Altenkirchen district (Westerwald) .

history

The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1437 in a deed of donation from Count Diederich zu Sayn, Herr zu Homburg and Freusburg .

The original location of the mill was on the right side of the Sieg below the castle hill on which the Freusburg is enthroned. In 1611 the Freusburger Mühle delivered grain for the Counts of Sayn to the Freusburg. Presumably in the 17th century, the location of the mill was moved to the other side of the Sieg, a little further downstream, in order to be able to use a larger gradient.

Until 1845 the Freusburger Mühle was a ban mill . The subjects of the Freusburg rule were only allowed to have their grain ground there. Then the meal obligation was lifted. In 1888 the capacity of the mill was expanded by installing roller mills so that it was then also possible to process imported grain. The distribution of the flour reached as far as the Sauerland and the Westerwald and finally even to the Rhine and Ruhr. In 1978 the grinding operation was stopped. Today there is only a small amount of hydropower used there to generate electrical energy and some of the historical buildings have already been used for other purposes.
