Friedemann Derschmidt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedemann Derschmidt (* 1967 in Salzburg , Austria ) is an Austrian documentary filmmaker and freelance visual artist specializing in video and media.

Life

Friedemann Derschmidt deals with art-based research . He teaches and works at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the film and television research laboratory. In his documentaries, exhibitions and research, he deals with memory and narration, the transformation of narration into history and issues of non-verbal transmission. Both in the context of his own projects and in supervising students, he pursues the concept of research-based teaching, i.e. an examination of the development processes of artistic production.

From 2011 to 2013 he headed the FWF project Memscreen (with Karin Schneider, Tal Adler, Attila Kosa) and in the follow-up project Conserved Memories (with Karin Schneider, Tal Adler, Niko Wahl, Anna Szöke) he devotes himself to the development of his Reichel complex project . With The Phantom of Remembrance 2013 he won the Diagonale's best short documentary film and his book Tell You It Your Kinde - National Socialism in Your Own Family was awarded one of the 15 most beautiful books in Austria in 2015 by the Federal Chancellery. Since 2013 he has been working with the Israeli artist Shimon Lev on the permanent development of the Two Family Archives project , which has been shown internationally since 2014. The 8-channel video installation 4 × Sally - a synoptic portrait of the Hitler Youth Salomon (Sally Perel) was created in this context . With the Family Archives project , Derschmidt goes beyond two family archives and synoptically focuses on a wide variety of family narratives in alternating collaborations with several artists. Family Archives was shown for the first time in July 2018 in the art pavilion in the old botanical garden in Munich.

In addition, he has a long-term cooperation with the Roma club Gipsy Radio and the jazz club Porgy & Bess. Other projects by Friedemann Derschmidt are, for example, the "Wine tasting with the homeless" with the homeless magazine "Augustin" in Vienna. As part of a cooperation with the Austrian / Palestinian musician Marwan Abado , he traveled twice to Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, which ended in 2010 with a satellite broadcast of a concert from the Unesco Palace in Beirut to Bethlehem in Palestine.

Since 2015 he has formed the board of trustees of the Anni & Heinrich Sussmann Foundation together with Ronen Eidelman and Daniela Zobel .

permanent breakfast

Derschmidt is the inventor and founding member of the participatory art project permanent breakfast , the "everlasting breakfast in public space", a breakfast pyramid game about a social movement that started in 1996 and has meanwhile spread worldwide and the rules of which have been translated into around 20 languages.

Despite its independence, the project feels connected to other worldwide “Reclaim the street” movements and sees itself as a real and virtual, aesthetic and discursive network.

The "open source" project is now operated in many places around the world by its own communities under different names, such as:
