The Peace Airport Shigatse ( Chinese 日喀则和平机场 , Pinyin Rikaze Heping Jīchǎng ; IATA : RKZ , ICAO : ZURK ) is a military and of civilian airport in Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . It is located 43 kilometers east of Samzhubzê in Xigazê on the upper reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo . With a height of 3,782 m above sea level. M. it is one of the highest located airports in the world. The length of the runway is 5,000 meters.
Construction of the airport began in the late 1960s, originally exclusively as a military airfield . The commissioning took place between 1970 and 1972. In April 2009 the expansion work for civil use began, the opening of the peace airport Xigazê for general air traffic took place at the beginning of October 2010. The newly constructed terminal with parking positions for three aircraft the size of the Airbus A319 or Boeing 737 has a capacity of up to 230,000 passengers.
The 5,000 meter long runway is necessary due to the altitude-related low air density and the high true airspeed in order to minimize the risk of stalling during take-off or landing . The required significantly higher landing speed ensures longer braking distances when landing. During take-off, in addition to the higher speed required for take-off, the engine power, which is also reduced due to the thin air, is another aggravating factor, so that a very long acceleration is necessary. The airport has an instrument landing system (ILS).
