The Evangelical Church of Peace in Karlsruhe-Weiherfeld ( Baden-Wuerttemberg ) is today under monument protection standing emergency church , in 1949, designed by Otto Bartning emerged. The Protestant church was the first church to be built in the Weiherfeld district and is one of the so-called emergency churches that were built throughout Germany after the Second World War based on the designs of the Karlsruhe architect Otto Bartning.

History and architecture

After 1945 there was an additional need for church buildings due to the destruction of churches and the influx of refugees. Instead of using barracks belonging to the Swiss military administration for this space requirement, as initially planned, Eugen Gerstenmaier , the head of the Evangelical Church's aid organization , commissioned Bartning to develop a design that, through the self-help of the communities and using rubble, was also a more cost-effective alternative in the long term depicted.

Bartning developed a tent-shaped wooden truss construction as the supporting structure , which was delivered prefabricated. Likewise were purlins , roof panels, rise of elements, doors, windows and benches produced in series, delivered and installed in one to two weeks. The exterior walls, which are not subject to structural stress, are double-shelled from rubble stones from the Karlsruhe town hall, with exposed brickwork on the inside and sandstone on the outside. At around 80,000 DM, the construction costs were about half as high as for a traditional church of the same size. The church offers seats for about 300 people.

The Friedenskirche was consecrated in November 1949 without a tower . In 1962 the tower was added, the main entrance relocated to the central axis, the sacristy and the toilet were installed on the ground floor of the tower, the basement was increased for use as community rooms according to plans by the architect Erich Rossmann and the tower was added. Subsequently, Rossmann was also responsible for the lower lying community hall with kindergarten and the rectory in the northeast, which were built as atrium houses with flat roofs.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the church, the interior of the church with the organ was repaired in 1999 , with only minor changes being made. Side passages were created by shortening the benches. The bench pedestals and the uppermost altar step were removed and windows, lighting and other technical equipment with the exception of the heating were replaced.

The church square southwest of the church was arranged by paving and furniture and designed as a quarter square . Today the square is shielded from the adjacent streets (Tauberstrasse and Schauinslandstrasse) by five large linden trees and framed plant beds.

Today about 1800 members of the Karlsruhe district Weiherfeld-Dammerstock belong to the Evangelical Peace Community. The community is part of the Evangelical Church in Karlsruhe and the Evangelical Regional Church in Baden .
