Friedensplatz (Dortmund)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Friedensplatz is a central event location in Dortmund . Historically it is referred to as the Neuer Markt .

At Friedensplatz there are important municipal facilities such as the Dortmund town hall , the old Dortmund town house built from red sandstone and the Dortmund municipal agency. The city garden with the underground station of the same name also borders the square . In the middle of the square, the peace column designed by the sculptor Susanne Wehland rises into the sky. Peace on earth is reminded on this pillar in various languages. A ginkgo tree planted in the immediate vicinity of the square also commemorates the victims of the American atomic bombing on Hiroshima .

The Friedensplatz is used as a venue for political demonstrations and cultural events ( Micro! Festival ). The championship celebrations of the local football club Borussia Dortmund are legendary , for which over 100,000 people gathered on the square and in the city center to celebrate the victory of their team.

For the 2006 World Cup , a large screen was installed on Friedensplatz as part of the official FIFA World Cup Fan Festival to broadcast all World Cup matches live. The capacity of the square for such events is around 15,000 to 20,000 people. The games of the 2008 European Football Championship and the 2010 World Football Championship could also be watched on Friedensplatz.

In the mid-1970s, Willi Reinke from Dortmund founded an initiative to rebuild Dortmund's old town hall on the Neuer Markt, today's Friedensplatz. Its original location was on the Alter Markt ; a citizens' initiative of the citizens of Dortmund was founded in January 2018 for this location.
