Frieder W. Lichtenthaler

Frieder W. Lichtenthaler (born January 19, 1932 in Heidelberg ; † November 6, 2018 in Darmstadt ) was a German chemist and university professor .

Life

Lichtenthaler studied chemistry at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1952 to 1957 and received his PhD in 1959 from Friedrich Cramer with a dissertation on the reactivity of enol phosphates. rer. nat. PhD. After two years as a postdoc with HOL Fischer at the University of California , Berkeley, he completed his habilitation with Clemens Schöpf at the Technical University of Darmstadt (1963), where he became a private lecturer and, from 1969, an associate professor. He turned down the appointments made in 1972 at the Universities of Kiel, Hohenheim and Darmstadt and took over the full professorship for Organic Chemistry II at the TU Darmstadt, where he was also Dean of the Department of Chemistry from 1976 to 1978. Visiting professorships led him to Keio University , Tokyo (1973), Kyoto University (1976), Tongji University, Shanghai (1981), 1985 to the University of California, Berkeley, 1989 to Lajos Kossuth University , Debrecen and 1992 to the Yokohama City University . From 1986 to 1988 Lichtenthaler was President of the European Carbohydrate Organization and Chairman of the Eurocarb IV Conference 1987 in Darmstadt. From April 2000 he was emeritus professor. Lichtenthaler was the oldest of five brothers, including Hartmut Lichtenthaler . In 1966 Lichtenthaler married the architect Evemaria von Infeld. The marriage had three children.

Lichtenthaler's research work, recorded in over 300 scientific articles and 8 patents, deals with the use of carbohydrates as renewable raw materials, with the synthesis of immunologically important oligosaccharides using the specially developed Ulosyl Donor Approach, as well as the total synthesis of complex natural substances in enantio-pure form from sugar-derived products Building blocks such as the antibiotics Gougerotin and Spectinomycin, the soft coral ingredients palythazine and Bisseton, the plant acid Daucic Acid or the Alternaria citri toxin. In addition, he worked extensively on the computer simulation of chemical and biological properties of sugars, cyclodextrins and starch . As a kind of hobby, he also deals with the history of chemistry, in particular with protagonists of carbohydrate chemistry such as Emil Fischer , Karl Freudenberg , Hermann Otto Laurenz Fischer and Burckhardt Helferich .
