Friedhelm Hillebrand

Friedhelm Hillebrand (* 1940 in Sichtigvor ) is a German engineer , mobile radio pioneer, telecommunications manager and specialist book author.

Life

Hillebrand studied electrical engineering with a focus on communications engineering (telecommunications) at RWTH Aachen University . He worked at Deutsche Bundespost until mid-1992 , most recently as Senior Managing Director. He has been responsible for GSM standardization work since 1984 . He is considered a co-inventor of SMS - a technology that his colleagues initially considered useless. Other personal contributions concerned GSM services, international roaming and management of standardization. From 1987 to mid-1992 he was responsible for the D1 network, the GSM network of Deutsche Telekom . This included the system technology, network planning, IT and procurement.

From 1994 to 1996 he was the first Technical Director of the World Association of GSM Network Operators (now GSMA), responsible for coordinating the network operator's strategy in standardization and worldwide GSM promotion. From 1996 to 2000 he was chairman of the SMG (Special Mobile Group) technical committee at the European Telecommunications Standards Institute . This committee with 11 subgroups and around 50 working groups was responsible for the standardization of GSM and UMTS . During his tenure, the General Packet Radio Service GPRS and the basics of UMTS were standardized. In 1997/8 he initiated the transformation of the GSM and UMTS standardization organization from a European framework into the globalized structure “Third Generation Partnership” 3GPP .

His long-term commitment to the technical and commercial development and promotion of GSM was recognized in 2000 at the GSM World Congress in Cannes with the Chairmans Award of the GSM Association GSMA . In 2001 he was accepted as a "Gold Member" in the "GSM Association Roll of Honor".

Since 2002 he has been a managing partner of the consulting firm Hillebrand Consulting Engineers GmbH, which advises and supports patent attorneys, network operators and manufacturers on patent issues. He is also the author of several specialist books.

On March 24, 2019, Hillebrand was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his activities in the mobile communications sector by the Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Andreas Pinkwart .

Since 1963 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Franconia Aachen .

On July 26, 2016, Hillebrand was in an XXL edition of the guess show Hard to believe! to guest.
