Friedhelm Jesse (born May 11, 1936 in Herne ) is a former German soccer goalkeeper .

Career

Youth in Herne (until 1961)

Jesse grew up in the Ruhr area town of Herne and began playing football in the youth team of the SV Fortuna 31 Herne club located there . The goalkeeper was considered a great talent at that time, belonged to the youth district selection and became Westphalia champion with this. From SV Fortuna, he made the leap to larger city rivals Westfalia Herne , who started in the top division Oberliga West from 1954 . However, with Hans Tilkowski, Westfalia had a number one goal, which from 1957 ran regularly for the German national team. Accordingly, it was difficult for Jesse to gain a foothold behind Tilkowski. Despite his great talent, he had no perspective on the team.

Time in Meiderich (1961–1965)

In the summer of 1961, Meidericher SV, a rival from the Oberliga West, secured the services of the then 25-year-old goalkeeper. At MSV, he immediately took on the role of goalkeeper and completed his first game for the new employer on August 6, 1961 in a 1-1 draw with Alemannia Aachen . In the further course of the season he did not miss a single encounter. He had played 58 league games for Meiderich before the club qualified for the newly founded Bundesliga in 1963 . With Manfred Manglitz , a competitor was put at his side, who received the trust of the new coach Rudi Gutendorf and displaced Jesse from the position between the posts. From then on Manglitz was the new undisputed goalkeeper, so that Jesse was not used in 1963/64 and so had no part in the runner-up in this season. Even after that he played no role, which led to his leaving Meiderich in 1965 without having played a Bundesliga match.

European Cup with Spora (after 1965)

After leaving the Bundesliga, he moved abroad in 1965 when he signed with Spora Luxembourg . With the team led by player -coach Victor Nurenberg he became a regular goalkeeper and made his debut a few months after his arrival in European competition when he was on the field in a 0-1 defeat against SC Aufbau Magdeburg in the European Cup Winners' Cup on September 22, 1965 . A defeat in the second leg brought the elimination with it. In 1966 he was with Spora Luxembourg Cup winner and was therefore allowed to compete again in the competition, with the team eliminated again in the first round. He also played with the team in the Messestädte-Pokal 1967/68 , but had to reach 16 times in two games against Leeds United .

A little later, the end of his active career followed. Jesse returned to his home in the Ruhr area and began working as a trainer, as which he worked from 1971 to 1973 for BV Herne-Süd . In addition, he joined the old league team from Westfalia Herne and remained loyal to them for many years.
