In 1983, Merz had the idea of organizing a meeting for players at the American club in Plittersdorf , to which a surprising 700 readers of the Spielbox registered. Since this number of players blew up the club, Merz got through his contacts to the then Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau , the area of the Essen Adult Education Center to hold his "German Players Days". After an announcement in the morning magazine of WDR 2 , 5000 visitors came to the event. In the following year, 15,000 visitors turned up and the meeting became the venue for the German team championship in the board game . In 1985 the event moved to Messe Essen .

Friedhelm Merz Verlag was also founded in 1985 in his apartment in Mehlem , a district of Bonn, as a specialist publisher for games and communication. Together with his partner Rosemarie Geu, Merz published waste disposal literature and the SpielReport as a games magazine. In addition, the publisher took over the publication of the magazine Die Pöppel-Revue , whose editor-in-chief Merz took over in 1989. In 1986 the German players' days were renamed to Internationale Spieltage SPIEL, the name has been retained to this day. After Friedhelm Merz's death in 1996, Ms. Geu and her daughter Dominique Metzler took over the management of the company, which has since concentrated entirely on the organization of the International Game Days, which attracted more than 160,000 visitors in 2016, and the German Games Prize.
