The Adelby Cemetery (often also referred to as Adelby Cemetery ) is the smallest of the three cemeteries in the city of Flensburg , where burials still take place today. Only the old cemetery, which belongs to the municipal museum complex, is smaller . The Adelby Cemetery belongs to the Adelby parish and is the most rural of the three cemeteries and also the only cemetery on the east side of Flensburg.

history

The Adelby cemetery evidently originated from the churchyard of the Johanniskirche, which is located on the western edge of the cemetery. The cemetery was incorporated into the Adelby area together with Tarup in 1974.

Buildings

The neighboring St. Johanniskirche is protected as a cultural monument. In addition, other parts of the cemetery were entered in the monument book, including the small Nordertor (not to be confused with the Nordertor in downtown Flensburg ), the Ostertor and the Westerpforte .

Gravesites

The cemetery includes a large number of grave sites on an 8 hectare site. On it, among other things, some graves of urban historical importance can be found. The tombstones up to 1870 were entered in their entirety in the monument book.

For example, a grave of significant city history is that of the Rings family. Nikolaus rings was the last miller of the royal watermill on Angelburger Strasse . He died without offspring because his children died prematurely. The grave of Lieutenant Asmus Jepsen , who was executed on May 6, 1945 as a deserter on the Twedter Feld firing range (see special area Mürwik ), is also located in Adelby cemetery . The naval officers Hans-Georg von Friedeburg , Wolfgang Lüth and Rudolf Petersen are also buried in the cemetery.
