Ocke Christian Nerong

Ocke Christian Nerong (born August 23, 1852 in Oevenum on Föhr ; † November 28, 1909 in Flensburg ) was a German teacher and local researcher.

Life

Ocke went to school in Wrixum and even learned Latin and French thanks to the support of the Boldixum pastor Frerks. He was first a preparer (corpse servant) in Adelby . From 1872 to 1875 he attended the teachers' seminar in Tondern and became a teacher on his home island of Föhr in the one-class village school Alkersum . He organized theatrical performances and founded a school library. In 1877 he married Friederike Lorenzen (1854–1942), the daughter of a Wyker shipyard owner, with whom he had six children. Here his homeland research began. He collected plants, beetles, butterflies, shells and snails. He was also a passionate astronomer. In 1880 he became a teacher on the mainland in fishing at the Dollerup village school and stayed there until his death.

As a restless homeland explorer, he spent all of his free time and also his holidays with his passion. He studied self-financed sources in all archives in the country up to Copenhagen . With thoroughness and conscientiousness he wrote chronicles about the island of Föhr and about his place of residence in the parish Grundhof . In addition, he published many newspaper articles and speeches on historical topics of his homeland.
