The chapel in Sommerach

The cemetery chapel (also the chapel of the Holy Family) in Sommerach , Lower Franconia, is a small church on the edge of the old town. It is located on the street Zum Engelsberg and is now part of the Catholic Dean's Office in Kitzingen .

history

At the end of the 17th century, the Sommerach cemetery was moved from the churchyard to its current location. After the Thirty Years' War , the so-called Herrgottshäuschen (Herrgottshäuschen) for the Sorrowful Mother of God was built on the edge of this new church as a predecessor to today's chapel . At the beginning of the 19th century the chapel had become dilapidated and a legacy was donated in 1816 for the construction or renovation of the little church.

In 1835 the chapel was demolished and rebuilt in the same year. The Obervolkacher M. Reuss was responsible for the new building . In 1836 the new chapel was completed. The benediction of the chapel was made on July 2, 1837 by Pastor Peter Fritz. A hundred years later, in 1936/1937, a renovation took place during which the previously open chapel was closed. In 1981 the altar inside was removed.

Architecture and equipment

The chapel presents itself as a simple rectangular building. It ends with a hipped roof . A large window was installed on the street side so that one can look inside. The entrance, a simple rectangular portal, is on the side. An inscription above the large window reads: "To the glory of God and to promote devotion / donated by / Eugen (?) And Barbara Ullamer / Peace and quiet of woe (?) Of the noble donors / 1817".

In addition to a simple crucifix and a few stations of the cross, the so-called gray torture forms the focus . The wayside shrine dates from 1511 and was brought there in 1981. It is one of the important late Gothic Franconian tortures. The Passion of Christ is shown in the essay. The wayside shrine runs out in the form of a gable with a hip roof.
